VUCA
(Bennett & Lemoine 2014)
VUCA
VUCA is one of many terms used in the military that has since entered the strategy vocabulary. The VUCA framework, developed at the U.S. Army War College in the 1980s, emerged in the early 2000s as an acronym used to describe the bleak and confusing context in which organizations are groping their way forward. VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. The pace of change and the number of variables affecting the operating environment are constantly increasing. Decision-making conditions are becoming ever more complex and uncertain. Understanding cause-and-effect relationships is difficult when the factors are tightly intertwined. The reliability and contradictory nature of information complicate its interpretation. The VUCA framework is a tool that organizations can use to interpret their challenges and opportunities.
