Purpose, Olemassaolon tarkoitus, Merkitys
(Hurth,Ebert,& Prabhu 2018)
Purpose
An organization’s meaningful and enduring reason to exist, which is aligned with its long-term financial performance, provides a clear framework for everyday decision-making, and unifies and motivates key stakeholders.
The concept has its roots in early organization theory, where Barnard (1938) regarded a common purpose as one of the three fundamental elements of a formal organization. Later, Drucker (1954) crystallized the purpose of business as creating a customer, shifting the focus away from mere profit maximization. As a strategy concept, core purpose took shape in Collins and Porras’s 1996 HBR article Building Your Company’s Vision, where it is defined as the organization’s “reason for being” and distinguished from both goals and strategy as part of the company’s “core ideology.”
Since the 2010s, discussions around the “purpose economy” have emphasized a purpose for companies that goes beyond purely economic activity, such as providing solutions to societal problems or combating climate change. (Hurth, Ebert, & Prabhu 2018)
